Pakistan’s rice export goes up during last two to three years and earn a major share of valuable foreign exchange. Due to increase in export the producer (farmer) also got best price while exporters earn a handsome profit. Everyone happy to increase in export and profit but no one think why the export of rice increase during few years? Why the prices of rice higher in Pakistan? What is the reason of good sale price for farmers?

If we are looking a few years back our export is low as compare to present and farmers price is not stable. The India is our main competitor in the international market either in EU, Middle East or Africa. The only one even changes the game completely and India’s export to EU decreases 60 percent. The Pakistan was only that fill this big gap in EU and start basmati rice export to EU. Do our farmer know Why India export decreased by 60 percent? The reason is the residual limit of a fungicide named tricylazole that use for the control of diseases.

Major Rice Exporting countries to EU

EU imports 216017 rice from around the globe. The top ranking is United State of America with 147924 ton rice imported while Pakistan stands on second with 21144 ton rice. India having export to EU is 19332 ton and standing on the third rank in term of exporting EU.

EU revised MRL (minimum residual limits) of different heath hazardous pesticides to the minimum level for both conventional and organic agriculture produce. EU only accept rice products that meet the MRL standards of the federation. Tricyclazole is one of the most dangerous fungicide use on rice for the control rice blast and other fungal issues. India facing serious troubling in rice export to EU and other countries only due to high residual level of tricyclazole in rice. India’s basmati export to the EU had declined to 60 percent only to the issue of tricyclazole.

The European Commission (EU) had revised the maximum residual limit (MRL) of tricyclazole to 0.1 parts per million (ppm) that was previously 1 ppm for all crops imported to EU before January 1st 2018. Any agriculture produce having higher residual level of tricyclazole from 0.1ppm will not permitted in EU. The India facing export restriction due to higher level of tricyclazole and export badly decreased to 60%.

The India Government, research institutes, agriculture extension and farmers united at single point. They are united to stop the use of this fungicide and again resume basmati exports to EU. This is happening in India they are trying to learn from mistake but in contrast we are sleeping and not interested to learn from the mistake of others or even learn from our past mistakes. This year Pakistan facing a long rainy and cloudy season during rice crop season that favor pest and diseases. This year our pesticide companies sale a record volume of pesticide and earn a huge profit. The pesticide companies also sale tricyclazole and farmers apply on rice field even no fungal issue recorded on the crop. Pesticide companies in Pakistan playing with the future of rice export to EU or other countries while the concern authorities have no concern with this issue. Just imagine if tricyclazole detected in one of our rice consignment shipped to EU having more MRL. What will be the future of our export? What price will offer to farmer? The answer is simple the complete collapse of the rice export.

It’s time to wake-up of government bodies, research institute, pesticides regulatory bodies, rice exporters and most import is the farmers. If we not take a serious action and prepared our self for future, we will be nothing in international rice export and not able to meet our competitors. We must start our journey on sustainable path of the rice production. We must take special care of using tricyclazole in specific and all pesticides in general. We must use pesticides only when they need and proper amount they have required to control the pest. If we follow this path we will minimize our expenses on crop production and also save our country future otherwise the future of farmer is dark and pesticides companies will flourish.
