Rice is divided into two main groups Basmati and Non-Basmati. Basmati rice always reflect the premium quality of aromatic basmati rice cultivated in Pakistan. Non basmati rice divided into two group; long grain and coarse grain varieties, long grain varieties having similar grain length like basmati but these varieties are non-aromatic while coarse varieties having short length and no aroma on cooking.
Another term “Hybrid rice” also use, it’s is use for both group of Basmati and Non-Basmati rice. Hybrid is basically combination of good charters from two different varieties in a single new variety.
Following is the list and history of all cultivated rice varieties available in Pakistan. All data summarized from a book title “Hand book on Rice varieties in Pakistan” Written by Ch. Mushtaq Ahmed (Director Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku) and Dr. Muhammad Akram (Pricipal Scientifica Officer NARC Islamabad) and the book is published by RICE RSEARCH INSTITUTE Kala Shah Kaku Punjab PAKISTAN.

Rice varieties in Punjab
Basmati Rice (fine long grain and aromatic) is popular in Punjab for cultivation. Punjab’s climate and soil work to the advantage of the production of Basmati rice varieties.
